What is a cumulative GPA?
Your cumulative GPA is the grade point average of every term you have completed, combined into a single number. Where a semester GPA covers just one term, the cumulative GPA is the running total that appears on your transcript and the number most colleges, scholarships and honors programs look at. It is a credit-weighted average, so terms in which you took more credits carry more weight.
How to calculate cumulative GPA
The math is straightforward. For each term, multiply the term GPA by the number of credits you took that term — that gives you the grade points earned in the term. Add up the grade points from every term, then divide by your total credits across all terms.
Suppose you have two semesters: a 3.6 GPA over 15 credits and a 3.2 GPA over 12 credits. The grade points are 54.0 and 38.4, which total 92.4. Your total credits are 27, so your cumulative GPA is 92.4 ÷ 27 = 3.42. Notice it sits closer to the 3.6 term because that term carried more credits. The calculator above does this for as many terms as you add.
Updating your cumulative GPA after a new semester
You do not need every past grade to update a cumulative GPA — just two numbers. Add one row with your current cumulative GPA and the total credits you have earned so far, then add a second row for the new semester's GPA and credits. The result is your updated cumulative GPA. This is the quickest way to see how a strong (or weak) semester will move your overall average before grades are official.
Cumulative GPA vs. semester GPA
Both numbers matter, for different reasons. A single strong semester GPA shows recent improvement, which admissions officers and academic advisors like to see. The cumulative GPA shows your overall record and is used for graduation honors such as cum laude, for keeping scholarships, and for meeting the minimum GPA some programs require. To find a semester GPA from individual classes, use the high school GPA calculator, and to weight Honors and AP classes use the weighted GPA calculator. If you need your GPA as a percentage, the GPA to percentage converter handles it.
